Costumes: Original Thoughts, or Tried and True?

With a Shakespearian play, there are many ways to costume it, but generally they fall into two categories: an original artistic take, or an Elizabethan feel. Both work well and allow the play to be seen in different lights and in different fashions. In the article "Nightmares and the Nature of Love", the costumes for the described production are said to be inspired by films and paintings, a much more modern version that is than the original Elizabethan clothes.
Elizabethan style clothes are well known, and Thyrza Richards does an interesting job at adding a little African influence into her fairies.
